The Center for Woman’s Studies/Department of International Society Research, in cooperation with the General Directorate for Combating Drugs and Psychotropic Substances at the Ministry of Interior, held a scientific symposium titled “Women and Drug Trafficking and the Major Risks to National and International Peace and Security” on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at the Freedom Hall, College of Political Science, University of Baghdad.
The speakers addressed various topics, including the impact of drugs on society and the role of international agreements in promoting community peace, as well as the effects of drug use on the human body and behavior. The event was attended by the President of the University of Baghdad, Professor Baha Ibrahim Insaf, along with many directors of research centers, academics, and specialists.
The symposium concluded with several key recommendations, including:
1. Activation of international agreements related to drug control with neighboring countries and working on enhancing cooperation mechanisms in this field.
2. Emphasizing the role of raising social awareness about the dangers of drugs in border areas, remote regions, and areas with security vulnerabilities. It also called for coordination between the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Culture and Media, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Health to build a strategy for protection, early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation of areas suffering from this phenomenon and to work on curbing it.
3. Introducing a subject on drug control into school curricula and addressing the Ministry of Education to raise societal awareness among the younger generation to combat this phenomenon.
