On the morning of Monday, May 19, 2025, the Department of Policies and Legislation at the Center for Women’s Studies, University of Baghdad, organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Right to Grant Nationality through the Mother under Iraqi Law”, held at the Center’s conference hall.

The workshop was presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Riam Abdul Sattar Abdul Jabbar, who addressed the legal and humanitarian aspects of granting nationality to children born to Iraqi mothers, particularly in cases where the father is unknown or not legally recognized. Special focus was given to the situation of children from the Yazidi community who have faced exceptional circumstances following armed conflicts.

Recommendations:
1.The need to amend the law to ensure nationality is granted to children of Yazidi women whose fathers are unknown or stateless, in a way that guarantees their rights.
2.Emphasis on adhering to the legal provisions regarding the granting of nationality, while taking humanitarian cases into account.
3.A call to amend existing legislation to ensure equality between fathers and mothers in transferring nationality to their children.
