The Women’s Studies Center, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit, conducted a training course on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 12-13, 2023, titled “The Role of the Iraqi Government in Combating Drugs: Toward a Legal Policy Vision.” The sessions were held in the center’s meeting hall.

Various topics were presented by lecturers from the Women’s Studies Center. Dr. Lara Hassan Abdullah and Ms. Zainab Mohammed Khalf led discussions on drugs and the government’s efforts to control their proliferation. Dr. Israa Saeed Assi addressed the criminal policy of the Iraqi legislator regarding drug and psychotropic substances laws.

The seminar was attended by staff and faculty members of the center, who discussed the impacts of drugs and the responsibilities of families and educational institutions in raising awareness to combat this issue.

The seminar concluded with several recommendations, including:

  1. Developing a national strategy to combat drugs, implementing deterrent legislation, and conducting serious trials for individuals involved in drug trafficking.

  2. Establishing treatment centers for addicts, organizing therapeutic programs in hospitals or outpatient clinics, providing counseling, and assisting individuals in overcoming addiction.

3. Enhancing awareness, especially among youth in universities and schools, about the psychological and physical detrimental effects of drugs. This can be achieved through social media, seminars, and various media outlets to explain the harms associated with drug use
