On Wednesday, December 13, 2023, Dr. Israa Saeed, the responsible person for the Quality Assurance Unit at the Women’s Studies Center / University of Baghdad, participated in a training course on sign language for the deaf and mute. In collaboration with the Psychological Research Center / University of Baghdad, the course addressed a legal axis focused on protecting the rights of people with disabilities, emphasizing the government’s necessity to prioritize this group and provide sufficient support for them.

Several institutions for the deaf and mute in Iraq attended the course, and at its conclusion, they showcased a bazaar featuring their handmade crafts.

The training course concluded with several recommendations, including:

  1. Ensuring adequate protection in the legal texts regulating the rights of people with disabilities.

  2. Activating the role of institutions responsible for caring for individuals with special needs by providing all essential requirements to support these special groups.

3. Amending the law for people with disabilities and special needs by increasing the employment rate in public institutions to 10%, in addition to strengthening the penalty for those who violate employment regulations, imposing imprisonment rather than just fines
