In support of the sixteenth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 16), which focuses on peace, justice, and strong institutions, and in alignment with the Third National Action Plan for Women, Peace, and Security for the year 2025—particularly its axis on protection and prevention—the Department of Policies and Legislation, in collaboration with the Women’s Affairs Unit at the Women’s Studies Center, organized a workshop on Monday, April 21, 2025, entitled “The Role of Women in Combating Ideological Extremism and the Legal Confrontation.”

The workshop was presented by Assistant Lecturer Ghufran Alawi Abdullah from the Government Contracts Division at the Presidency of the University of Baghdad. It aimed to shed light on the concept of ideological extremism and the pivotal role women play in confronting it. Additionally, it addressed the legal foundations for countering this phenomenon, based on the 2005 Constitution of the Republic of Iraq and relevant criminal legislation. The session also reviewed the role of the United Nations Security Council in combating extremism.

The workshop concluded with several key recommendations:
1. Promoting moderate religious, cultural, and moral values, and fostering a culture of tolerance and acceptance of others.
2. Directing media discourse toward spreading the values of moderation and confronting extremist ideologies.
3. Enhancing the role of women in combating extremism through their educational and societal influence.
